As the result of the start phase for GATE-1 determines the further development GATES from timing and cost of view, this phase is nearly always the most complex step in the innovation process. Here the basics for possible business opportunities are created.

IS can offer support at GATE-1 of the innovation process, based on a draft specification for the product - system per- formance and application. After the deve- lopment of the ideas, concept development can be carried out at the customer's pre- mises. It is of course possible to start di- rectly with concept development if ideas are already available.
IS can also independently carry out an Idea & Concept Development Study and use the results later for comparison and evaluation purposes alongside those achieved by customer's own internal studies.
A good and open cooperation between IS and the customer will determine the end results to a great extent.
